Starting October 1, USCIS began using Tablets to administer the English reading and writing parts of the Naturalization Exam (Citizenship Test)
In an effort to further modernize the citizenship process, on October 1st, USCIS began using tablets to administer the reading and writing parts of the Citizenship Test.
The citizenship test itself did not change, nor the vocabulary used for the reading and writing parts of the test, but now applicants will use a stylus pen on a digital tablet instead of paper to write the sentence the interviewing officer asks the applicant to write and for the reading part, a sentence will appear on the tablet and the interviewing officer will ask the applicant to read that sentence.
According to the USCIS website prior to the citizenship test beginning, the officer will instruct the applicant on how to use the tablet. In addition, USCIS can continue to use the paper method on a case by case basis.
The civics part of the citizenship test will continue to be done verbally without the tablet.
